Local Happenings Near Mystic Quarry This Winter 2022

It’s a new year and some great things are happening in Hill Country this winter.

The Fishin’ is Fine

Trout will continue to be released every week at the dam. Upcoming dates are January 21st, 28th, and February 27th, 2022.

Speaking of which, Trout Fest is happening February 18-20 and is just a 10-minute drive from Mystic Quarry. Here at the Guadalupe River, trout fishing is a big deal.

It’s the southernmost stocked trout stream in the U.S. Serious anglers are willing to travel and are always looking for a good new spot.

Winter Texans Descend on Mystic Quarry

This is the time of year where our annual winter Texans arrive at Mystic Quarry. They are always a fun bunch. In fact, they have their own Instagram Group and calendar with outings. Feel free to join. They have a happy hour here at our Rec Hall every Friday at 4pm.

Canyon Lake is a beautiful place to be in the winter with our temperate climate. With an abundance of small towns to explore and the big city culture of Austin and San Antonio not far away, you’ll never run out of things to do in the area. If you choose to keep close by, we offer a full calendar of events, both onsite and off.

Winter Texans are a friendly and welcoming bunch. Where new people are just friends you haven’t met yet. All are welcome.

Live Entertainment Coming Up

Just a 17 minutes’ drive away is Gruene Hall, where music is happening nearly every night. There are some big names that come through here. In fact, Leann Rimes is playing for two nights in February, the 11th and 12th. Hurry to get your tickets to see her on the 11st, because the 12th is sold out! Dale Watson & His Lone Stars, our resident local legend, is playing a Valentine’s show on the 14th. See the full calendar here.

There’s Caves in Them Thar Hills

There are some local caves and caverns that are good attractions to visit during the cooler months.

Natural Bridge Caverns. As the largest known commercial caverns in America, this attraction features a 60-foot natural limestone slab bridge that spans the amphitheater space of the cavern’s entrance. Located near San Antonio, daily guided tours allow you to explore these large underground chambers – the largest being bigger than a football field!

Cave without A Name. Located about 40 miles due west of Mystic Quarry near Boerne, this is a limestone solutional cave that is a National Natural Landmark. It is a living history landmark with six major rooms housing stalactites, stalagmites, and other amazing formations. The cave’s age has sections ranging from 100 million up to 400 million years old.

Cascade Caverns. Take an hour-long guided stroll through a wonderworld at a comfortable 60-65 F degrees. This is the Lone Star State’s only show cave with a 100-foot waterfall, where water gradually cascades down a rock wall. There’s a nearby RV park and campground, and when you see the big green dinosaur out front, you know you’ve arrived.

Wonder Cave. Housed in Wonder World Park, a natural theme park located near San Marcos, the Wonder Cave is an ancient earthquake cave and recorded Texas Historic Landmark. Make a day of it to explore all this park has to offer.
