The Wine Lovers Guide to the Texas Hill Country

There are over 50 wineries throughout the Texas Hill Country. You read that right, FIFTY! It is no wonder vino enthusiasts love to stay at Mystic Quarry.

The Texas Hill Country offers an ideal environment for growing grapes with its rolling hills, hot, sunny weather, and rich, rocky soil. Did you know Texas is said to have started growing grapes before California? However, it has only been in the last 50 or so years that the wine industry has blossomed in Texas.

Texas vineyards feature many wines with native crops, and for a wine to carry the title “Texas Wine,” it must contain at least 75% native Texas fruit. Grapes from other regions like France and Spain can also be grown in the Texas Hill Country due to the ideal climate and soil. From light, fruity wine like Riesling, to full bodied reds like Merlot and Zinfandel, there is something for everyone!

Ready to drink some wine?

If you want to stay close to MQ, Dry Comal Creek is a must. It features picturesque vineyards with outdoor seating, and great wine without an exurbanite price tag.

If you want to experience a true variety of Texas wines, a trip to Fredericksburg may be in order. Just over an hour's drive from Mystic Quarry, you can venture through this unique town, rich with German influence. With ten wineries and tasting rooms located in the downtown area and many vineyards throughout the city, this place is a must-see!

Want the whole crew to enjoy? Why not let someone else do the driving! Check out Yellow Rose of Texas Wine Tours. They can shuttle you to and from vineyards and bring you right back to Mystic Quarry. Not only will they provide the shuttle, but make your winery tour reservation and include the tasting fees. You can choose where to explore, but their knowledgeable staff can help plan your trip. A wine tour is a perfect activity for wedding parties!

Bonus tip: Throughout the year, the Texas Hill Country Wineries Association hosts self-guided wine events with passport tickets that allow you to taste more Texas wine for less! You can visit up to 4-wineries/day for tastings and get discounts on wine purchases. If you plan to do more than a day of exploring, this pass is well worth it!

Cheers, y’all!
